About Workplace Relations
Workplace relations in Australia are governed by both
federal and state legislation. The federal Government is
in the process of establishing a national workplace
relations system. The State of Victoria is covered by
the federal system.
In the past, Australia had a highly interventionist
workplace relations system. Governments established
industrial tribunals to assist in resolving disputes
between employers and employees. On the federal level,
this tribunal is the Australian Industrial Relations
Commission.
There has been a marked change in the focus of the
Australian workplace relations system in recent years,
with a move away from a reliance on external
intervention, and towards encouraging employers and
employees to reach agreements at the workplace or
enterprise level.
It is strongly recommended to consult a Workplace
Relations Practitioner before engaging in any business
activity involving employment.
